The Church Fathers — from Justin Martyr to Augustine and Boethius — transformed Greek philosophy into tools for understanding revelation. The volume culminates in Anselm of Canterbury, the "father of scholasticism," whose formula fides quaerens intellectum ("faith seeking understanding") established the harmony between authority and reason. Volume Two covers the rise of universities, the syntheses of Thomas Aquinas, and Ockham's nominalist revolution. It concludes with scholasticism's legacy from the Council of Trent to the present. This work shows why the pursuit of understanding faith still matters today.
